چکیده

In recent years, many econometric studies have confirmed the existence of inter-industry wage differentials. Even after controlling for a large number of joband worker related characteristics, and demographic variables, large and statistically significant industry wage differences remain. Moreover, these differences exist for union as well as for non-union workers and seem to be remarkably similar (i) across countries with different labor market institutions, (ii) across occupations, and (iii) across time. Two particularly interesting facts are that (a) high profit industries tend to pay high wages and (b) if one occupation in an industry is highly paid, all other occupations in that industry also tend to pay high wages (Dickens and Katz (1987), Katz and Summers (1989)).

Neoclassical Models of Imperfectly Competitive Labor Markets

The scenario of perfect competition, as augmented by human capital theory, yields a large body of testable hypotheses concerning labor market outcomes. These hypotheses, overviewed in the first chapter of this volume, might all be understood as applications of three more fundamental implications of perfectly competitive equilibrium conditions: no unemployment or vacancies, the law of one wage, ...

Discrimination and Efficiency Wages: Estimates of the Role of Efficiency Wages in MaleFernale Wage Differentials

R ecent work on efficiency wage models has increased our understanding of discrimination, as well as the operation of labor markets (Bulow and Summers [1986]; Bowles [19851; and Akerlof [19841). Bulow and Summers [I9861 developed an efficiency wage model of labor markets that has direct implications for discrimination. They argued that the wage premia necessary to keep males and females from sh...

Current Population Survey data for 1985-95 and data on site-speci’c amenities are used to estimate earnings differentials based on nominal wages, wa...

Competing Explanations of Male Interracial Wage Differentials: Missing Variable Models versus Job Competition

COMPETING EXPLANATIONS OF MALE INTERRACIAL WAGE DIFFERENTIALS: MISSING VARIABLE MODELS VERSUS JOB COMPETITION Persistent interracial wage differentials present a challenge for neoclassical models of discrimination, which claim that long run competition is not consistent with persistent discrimination. Accordingly, several missing variable explanations are proposed in the literature. These modif...

Efficiency Wages in Pakistan's Small Scale Manufacturing

This paper investigates wage differentials between workers in subcontracting and non-subcontracting firms, using data from a recent survey of small manufacturing firms in Gujranwala, Pakistan. The paper finds that subcontracting workers receive a high wage premium and invokes efficiency wage arguments to explain this differential. The paper argues that due to a client/vendor monitoring problem ...
